During late October, several MFA Film second year students (Class of 2026) collaborated to create horror trailers to be screened with UGA Theatre’s production of Evil Dead: The Musical.
Outside of the their fall semester’s coursework and thesis film development, the group of CO’26 students worked with resources at MFA Film to complete a creative challenge put out by UGA Theatre: To accompany their November production of Evil Dead: The Musical, any and all interested UGA students were invited to film a 1-minute mock “B-movie horror trailer” to be screened ahead of the musical each night. Based on the Evil Dead franchise created by Sam Raimi, the production blended slapstick comedy with horror tropes, and each show kicked off with the trailers students created.
The group of MFA Film students leapt right into the challenge, and collectively wrote, directed, shot, and edited three B-movie horror trailers, combining new ideas with homage to horror tropes from the 50s through the 80s. The students swapped through cast and crew roles across a rapid 2-day shoot at Athena Studio Production Learning Center, on the soundstage and surrounding exteriors.
In “Night of the Living Room,” a spoof on late 60s horror movies, a party among friends turns into a deadly night when the living room furniture attacks. In “The Naughty List,” a holiday twist on 80s slashers, Christmas takes a dark turn when Santa Claus starts picking off all merrymakers who aren’t on the “nice” list. In “Br11an,” parodying horror franchises that seem to go on forever, a horror killer with a resume of slasher sequels returns for his inevitable 11th film.
