That’s a Wrap!

On Wednesday, October 30th, first-year MFA students gathered at Athena to celebrate wrapping production on their fall-semester short films.

Within the month of October, the cohort shot a total of 16 films, tackling a diverse array of genres and subjects. Each student wrote and directed their own film, and also worked on other students’ films throughout the month in key crew roles like Producer, Director of Photography, 1st Assistant Director, and Sound Mixer.

The students dove into creative and logistical prep through a rigorous pre-production period. When it came time for the whirlwind of production, the cohort filmed as many as five short films within one weekend. Directors and producers partnered with Athens-area vendors and residences to shoot their films on-location all across the city, as well as taking advantage of the MFA’s own soundstages at the Studio Production Learning Center (SPLC) at Athena Studios. At the end of a long month of filming, to reflect back on production and celebrate their hard work, the students gathered together for a Halloween-themed wrap party – costumes encouraged!

The SPLC at Athena Studios transformed into a themed Wrap Party Headquarters, featuring customizable Halloween snacks, decor, music, arts & crafts, and a photo wall where students got to show off their costumes.

Program Director Marty Lang took to the mic to commend the students on a busy and successful production period and to congratulate them on shooting their fall films. Students then went head-to-head in friendly competition over rounds of trivia.

Now, the students have already kicked off postproduction for their films and are busy editing, sound-designing, and color-grading…

The films will be screened on Saturday, December 7, at 2pm at the UGA’s Fine Arts Building Balcony Theatre 400.
